Data and insights to advance characterization of groundwater resources in the Plaine des Gonaïves, Haiti

Abstract The Plaine des Gonaïves houses a regionally significant yet data-scarce coastal aquifer in one of the driest regions Haiti. It is primary source water for region, including Haiti’s third largest city, Gonaïves. Pressure on groundwater resources will be compounded as municipal services modernize and energy infrastructure enables resurgence commercial agriculture. In anticipation increased stress greater impacts, this study was undertaken (including data discovery, reconnaissance, analysis) to gain insights advance understanding resources. alluvial covers >115 km 2 , exceeds 100 m thickness, supports pumping yields high 532 3 /h. heterogeneous multilayer exhibits hydraulic conductivities that range by an order magnitude, influencing flow, residence times, chemistry. Significant recharge occurs central upgradient portions plain; river infiltration appears more than direct infiltration. downgradient portion plain, confined pressure increases discharge areas include Quinte River, springs, wetlands, ditches canals.
